Toss, Toss

I have never been to the theater. I have never wanted to go. I do not walk around my house singing show tunes (like some of my BFFs) I much prefer a good Sox game or Bulls game to a room full of gay men and melodramatic women singing "I Feel Pretty." Or so I thought.

This weekend I saw "WICKED" in Chicago. Wow. It was really good. There. I said it. I enjoyed the theater. The cast was amazingly talented. I had no idea people could sing like that. I guess I figured those who could had albums and those who couldn't, well, did theater. I do have to add that I was cursing the entire Communications Dept at Calvin College. Could I just go and enjoy the story and the music and the costumes? Nope. I had to disect the entire show for hidden Biblical references and Christian themes and metaphors. (Found a bunch of 'em. Thanks for asking.) I could now write a paper on "Culturally Relevant Religious Themes in Wicked" that Prof. Schultze would be proud of.

So now I have let loose with a few bars of "Popular" and even taught Greta "Tomorrow" this morning. Yes, I do realize it's from "Annie". That's the only other show tune I know. DO NOT volunteer to teach me more. This is already a shock to my system. I am off to practice my jazz hands.

"What is this feeling"? "Something Bad"? Leaving you saying, "I'm not that girl"? All of this in "One Short Day"? "Wonderful"!!! I know it's a "hard knock life" but just know that "You're never fully dressed without a smile" but all of this will get you to "Easy Street" and "The sun will come out tomorrow". All of which will make you "Popular" So toss-toss and come aboard. Looking forward to the Jazz hands!!
Anyway - my mom has been talking for two days about the biblical references in Wicked - you two should talk! I didn't pick it up!!

BTW~Sound of Music is awesome. I have the CD, so next couch day you will be learning a few songs.
You really don't know "My Favorite Things"? They always play it at Christmas. Rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens....

I was so surprised at how good Wicked was. I actually love theater (well, musicals), but everyone made such a big deal out of this one that I thought for sure I'd be disappointed. But I wasn't. The only problem is that Popular song NEVER leaves your head. EVER! Maybe that wouldn't be so bad except I only know like 5 words...
