A Rose by Any Other Name

Ask any of my friends and they will tell you Pregnant Jen is obessessed with baby names. I have spent about 80% of the time of each pregnancy fretting over what to name the baby. I owe every baby name book on the planet. I am on a 9 month quest for the absolute prefect name.

I have always said some of this obessesion comes from the fact that I hate my name. Always have. I was one of a zillion Jennys so when Aunt Barb changed it to "Jenni" to separate me from her daughter "Jenny" I was so happy to be different. As an adult I still hate that whenever I call someone I always have to say my last name. I think of "Jennifer" as the ultimate bimbo name. I wanted to be a lawyer but "Jennifer" didn't have the same classic cool as "Katherine" or "Margaret" I also hate that my name screams "I WAS BORN IN THE 70's!"

So now that you know how much I hate my name, you can help name the baby. Baby Girl that is. Baby Boy has had a name since Amelia that will be used in the event of outdoor plumbing. Baby Girl is running out of options. We are looking for something classic and pretty. Timeless is good. A perfect example of a name we love is Abigail. But it is way too popular. Here's some other ground rules, so to speak.

1. At least 2 syllables. This is Tim's rule.
2. No repeat intials of what we have. So no C, A, or G. EXCEPTION if it is a different sound. Like "CH" instead of hard "C".
3. Nothing ending in "a"
4. Can't be in the top 50. This used to be 100 but beggars can't be choosy.
5. No "L" names. Sounds stupid with our last name.
6. No unisex names. This is also Tim's rule.

So have it! Give us some suggestions and maybe you'll come up with the winner!

Jillian? (I would say Alexis or Alexa, but you already said no "A" names.) Victoria?

I love Jillian~~Tim says it sounds like Gilligan. He is like a 7th grader. :-)

I'm pregnant too - due in November. We think we have our names, but I can't reveal them. Some other girls named we considered were Shayna, Katia (pronounced Ka-tee-a), Megan, Shiloh, and Raeanne or I guess it could be Rae Ann. My husband like Kamryn (similar to Cameron for a boy, but it means "crooked nose" so that was out) We had a much harder time with the boy's name and we're not completely sold on the one we chose.

This is a no win situation...I hope all of you blogging friends know this...I've taken this quiz 3 times before and you can never win!

But good luck!

mommy brain is right - no win situation. as far as i know, she has a girl name picked out already. she has decided she might not be all that wild about it anymore, but i think it's just an excuse to once again obsess over baby names. so, to all you who think you have a shot at actually coming up with a winner for her...good luck!

and carol - she can't use jillian, it's high on my list for a future girl name and she has already stolen on of my names.

i am not said...

how about fiona, cinderella, pocahontas, snow white, jazmine - wait I know you can't use that one - or belle? I think any one of those would suffice and meet your criteria, right?

Jana~you have just listed Amelia's full list for her baby sister. Her boy name is "Prince"

Even though I know this is fruitless, I will humor you anyway~
Bethany
Brooke
Mallory
Annaliese
Violet
Evelyn
Joy
Those are simply ones I have considered, but seeing as I will NEVER have a girl, it seems time to part.
Maybe I should blog the same request for boys names, I am plumb out!!

Elizabeth is my girls name. I'll let you have it since I won't be needing it.
AnneMarie is also quite nice :-) Your kids have no idea that is my real name so it will work out well!
How about Desiree, Delores, Diedre,Daphne, Dallas, Mabel, Trixie, Molly, Polly, Jocelyn, Madeline, Meredith, Gomer???

I'm not going to play...too dangerous for me to think about baby names since a certain husband here hasn't taken to the knife...anyway, I get the no L name thing. Try this one on...I really LOVE the name Emma. But...Emma Ettema...ICK! Just couldn't do it!

Carol said...

Jen, I had a friend spell it like "Gillian" -- now that would definitely raise up some "Gilligan flags"!

I'm glad to see Annaliese made the list, but I know your reasons for not using it. :)
I know you don't want another 'a' ending name, but what about Eliza? Jared's cousin named her daughter Bronwyn...that's pretty. I'll think of more soon, even though I know it's pointless...lol.

I love Annaliese~it was on my list with Greta! I also love Eliza, was on the list before too. Now they are both too close to Elise. I also really like Bronwyn. I thought Tim might like it as he's real into British/Welsh sci-fi kind of stuff. Guess not. He hated it!

I love Jillian and Lillian and Lia -- but all of those don't meet your criteria. I"m going to be brave here and tell you are girl name... it's Kendall. But I think I'm safe because it's the "c" sound. ;o)

Other than those, I'm all out because, well, I've already picked mine!

...tell you OUR (not "are") girl name.

*I hate typos!!!!!*

Hi, I found your blog while browsing. I'm pregnant too, due at the end of May, so I have a few ideas I thought I'd throw at ya. Madelyn, Sara, and Emily are my faves - all classic and pretty.

Mommy Brain said...

lil mamma, run for your life you didn't follow rule #4...and from my experience it should be #1 on the list.

candi said...

how about Charlotte?

Mommy Brain said...

Candi, have you played this game before or do you have inside information?

I like Kalina/Calina for a girl...it's someone's last name at our church and it seems like such loss to use it as a last name don't you think?

I know we've moved on, but have you considered Trinity??

Jen said...

I do like it. But where I come from it's a college, not a name. And I think my family would consider it a bit sacreligous.

But then if you ever have a boy you could name him Neo!!
